R: What do you think is the most important thing about this topic?
I: Learning how to deal with being overwhelmed can be very important for people who are easily frustrated. Learning to get help early on as opposed to the last minute can help. Where to get help. Also self-help, everything from taking a break to knowing when to get back on the horse so to speak.
R: I’m wondering, what do you think about this subject is so important now-a-days?
I: Once you learn to stop being overwhelmed, you’ll alleviate anxiety. The lower stress is good for your health and relationships. People will like being around you more if you are happy and healthy.
R: Describe what’s so special about this topic in how it helps folks live life better.
I: When a person is able to understand how to overcome their feelings of being overwhelmed, they are able to better deal with those feelings. In the past when I have felt overwhelmed, I have tended to just “give up.” After learning how to deal with those feelings, I have learned to take things one step at a time and to prioritize things of importance. I have been much more successful and happy since learning to do that.
R: At the end of the day, who would you pick to be the best at doing what matters most regarding this topic?
I: If you’re starting to feel overwhelmed, you’ve probably let your ego get in the way. You’ve either taken on too much in order to prove something to yourself or others or you are worrying needlessly about performance and how others will perceive you. Take a few breaths and you’ll find a pocket of calmness that allows you to put your ego in perspective. You can either drop a task or two or drop your attachment to the outcome of what you’re doing.
R: Break it down for me real quick – who just plain sucks at this topic?
I: Stop what you are doing for a minute and just breath. Close your eyes and try to clear your mind. It can be difficult to do, but try focusing on something that you enjoy. Feel your pulse slow to normal again and then open your eyes. Start your task again, but slowly. Work your way back up to the pace you were at before becoming overwhelmed. Repeat as necessary.
R: Give us an example of what you do to make this topic a part of your daily duties.
I: First, you must acknowledge the feelings you are having. Second, take a deep breath and focus on your breathing for about 5 minutes. Lastly, you should try building a list in order of most important task to least important task. Take one step at a time and work on each of the tasks in order of priority.

I: It is good to bring this topic into a person’s life when they can handle stress which is on a case by case basis. This is because different people handle stress differently and if too much is overwhelming a person, they can react differently. So it is good to gauge when a person is ready to be taught how to handle stress and a sense of being overwhelmed, which will help them tackle future situations.
R: Describe a time when it is inappropriate to bring up this subject.
I: Life is complicated. It would be difficult for a person to be able to cope with someone giving them advise about pressures of life when they are under a great deal of pressure. People need help sometimes not advise. Certainly not situational awareness speech.
R: If you can to name a place where this topic works really well, where would that be?
I: A student during finals week. An artist who is trying to meet a deadline for a gallery show. A person who is working in a high intensity financial job.
R: What place is this subject just totally inappropriate for?
I: Sometimes things are overwhelming and its important to recognize that. If you are overloaded with work and having financial difficulty, but start having cluster headaches, if you ‘overcome’ the feelings of being overwhelmed, you may inadvertently overlook that the cluster headaches are being caused by excess stress. If the headaches continue you may become further stressed because you believe you have a major illness that you can’t identify and spent time and money at doctors, further feeding into the stress loop. You have to be able to look at things objectively and recognize that sometimes things are just overwhelming.
R: Who’s someone that could gain quite a bit from looking further into this topic?
I: A person who fears public speaking could use this information to control that fear and make it disappear in the eyes of the viewers. That fear may still be there, but only the speaker is aware of it. To the audience he will be completely calm and confident. The speaker’s understanding of this fear will enable them to become the speaker they want to be.
R: Describe at least one thing you would recommend to someone looking into this topic more.
I: Remember why you are doing the thing that got you overwhelmed in the first place. Pause for a moment, then go back to your task calmly. Remember that the overwhelming sensation will pass and you will be doing the things you enjoy soon enough.
R: Please, let us know what you think is the biggest problem related to this topic?
I: When trying to overcome feelings of being overwhelmed, the person should try to avoid dwelling on the entire issue as a whole. The person should try to categorize their concerns into smaller parts. If the person can break their fear into manageable tasks, and avoid looking at the entire problem at once, the person is more likely to overcome being overwhelmed. The person should also avoid harmful behaviors, such as substance abuse or sleep deprivation.
R: Describe a good idea for bringing this topic into our lives today.
I: I used to get easily overwhelmed, and I have a lot of friends at University who let stress take over. My advice to them is to take one thing at a time and do it, and completely forget about everything that you still have yet to do. I pick a task, and I say to myself, “I’m doing this now.” And, I do it. And, when I’m finished I pick another task and repeat. I waste more time being overwhelmed if I think about everything else I have yet to do. And, sometimes I feel overwhelmed with the fact that I’m overwhelmed.
