Sometimes people can feel locked into their career path and not really know what change or help is available for them. Some people just end up being complacent in their position, and I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with that, but I like to think that everyone likes to seek out growth and true fulfillment at a higher level at some point in their life.
Now, whether this is in a leadership position, in a volunteer position, or in an entrepreneurial position, is really up to you. The point is that there’s help out there for you to really undo your mental blocks and get the keys to open new doors when you seek help through the next three tips I’m going to give you
1) Seek Mentors Online
This probably sounds obvious to you, but if you haven’t found a forum, an online group, or a blog that’s aligned with whatever you’re interested in professionally, then you’re really doing yourself a disservice. If you’re interested in online publishing, then you need to look into that (I suggest this site and this site (awesome guys, though here’s your crudeness warning lol)) to get you started). If you’re interested in online marketing, there’s plenty of groups for that, too (forums are gems here – sorry no recommendations! :P).
If you’re interested in being a better corporate leader, then you need to learn from the advice of others. They’re more than willing to give it to you, no matter the time, the location, or the experience level. Seek it out and start building yourself up for the mentors that have done what you want to do. The last corporate job I worked had an official mentoring program setup within the overall structure. A neat idea and something you can look into.
2) Try Self Assessment
A non-people oriented way of getting advice and hints on your growth and where you need to go is by taking self assessments. These are what I like to call “third party tools” or “external eyes” that help you see what’s really going on in your life and mind. The hints and results you get from these tests will allow you to become aware of what might be stopping you and what you can do to grow along your path.
They’re great tools to help increase your awareness and maybe do away with the “blind-sidedness” that has grownup in your career path so far. And hey it won’t cost you a dime unless you want to look further into the nitty-gritty details as a lot of them are free. You can’t afford to NOT look into these things, folks.
3) Get LinkedIn and Ask
This is something that kind of blew my mind when I first ran across it, but you are probably more than familiar with LinkedIn.com now. However, are you active on there in the professional groups that are available? There are plenty of groups that are perfectly aligned with whatever company, industry, or even position that you’re looking for.
Unless you’re part of those groups and being active in their discussions, you’re really not understanding and keeping a pulse on that position, group. or industry. You boost your efforts greatly by being with the people that are already doing what it is that you want to do in these focused professional groups on LinkedIn. You’re setting yourself up for a positive future that’s really in your own control the more you are involved with those in the know.
Seek Help and Ye Shall Find It
Help is on the way for your career change. You can stop feeling locked in by seeking mentors online, trying self assessments, and trying detailed professional groups on LinkedIn for hints at your next step. I have a hint for you, and that’s to take the Jung personality test as a wonderful free self assessment that will help give you hints you can use.
