Not too long ago I took a total of 96 hours of leadership development training, but I wasn’t exactly sure how to use it. Yeah I had the workbooks, and went through the exercises, but I didn’t really understand the theory and information behind it. This really hurt because it didn’t allow me to apply it directly to the things that I do in my life and at work.
In order for you to avoid this similar in your leadership training activities, programs and seminars, it’s best to learn the reasons behind the tools so that you can use them more effectively. Here are 3 things that you must keep in mind.
Seek to Learn About Personalities
When you have a greater understanding about personalities you begin to see that people actually do work differently. People actually do respond differently to the things they come across and deal with every day. This helps you take a laser guided approach to working with people, as opposed to some generic approach that was taught during a business course back in collage, tailor your management methods and your leadership tactics to the individuals personality for ultimate success.
Seek to Learn About Motivators
If you don’t know what really gets someone going and starts that inner fire for getting stuff done, you might cause more trouble then you intend in doing any type of recognition or reward of the work that those people have done. If someone is not motivated by money giving them a check is nice, but it won’t really do anything to serve the motivational purpose you intended.
If someone is a complete introvert, and hates public recognition of all forms, holding a party for them is probably the worse idea you could come up with and will probably make them want to stay under the radar the next time. Understand peoples motivators in order to help them work more effectively.
Seek to Learn About Strengths
Once you’ve considered people’s personalities and their motivators, then you can start to realize that yes, people do have strengths and weaknesses that determine how well they get stuff done and the return on their invested efforts and how that fits in the companies goals.
If someone is excellent at communication and creativity then yeah they should be doing speeches and seminars for your company. However if their main strengths are not aligned with these public speaking qualities, you’d be doing a great disservice to that person and the company by putting them in that position.
