I regularly talk to people at work, on the internet, and in person. They all seem to think that wherever they’re at, it’s pretty much where they’re going to be for life. Sure, they could see maybe a lateral move to a different company or industry, but they don’t think that they are going to be the next awesome Joe or next awesome Jane.
This makes me a little sad because I like to think that there’s infinite potential in everyone and that they should never stop doing what they like to do best. People should always seek the next level up and figure out what they do for more people, to make this world a better place.
This article is to get you and your mind in order with the options that are available for your career change so you can fill your path with the right next steps you need to take.
1. Too Much? Go Down!
It sounds weird but it’s something you need to keep in mind. If you’ve gone up to a management or leadership position and it’s just not working for you anymore, or it’s just too much to handle, there’s nothing wrong with going down.
You can seek a lead or project management type position below whatever manager is above you, and still be just fine. There will be a period of time where it’s going to be awkward, but it’s a whole lot better than feeling completely overwhelmed and inadequate at a higher level that you are no longer interested in. It’s something you need to discuss if it fits your current state.
2. Too Little? Go Up!
On the other hand, if you’re a base or entry-level employee and are seeking opportunities for growth, then you need to talk to your management or the team members for what leadership and higher visibility opportunities are available.
This doesn’t mean you need to lead the company or anything; it just means you need to advertise that you’re interested in growth, and more often than not, companies will help you in a path that works best for you and the company. However, don’t be afraid to consider options outside of your current company or industry too. Sometimes that just needs to happen.
3. Don’t Care? Go away!
There’s some people out there that I would say, are a little bit more risky and interesting than your typical person in a corporate environment. We’re talking about your entrepreneurs, your freelancers, your stay-at-home moms and other awesomely motivated people like that.
These are people that have something they’re more interested in life, whether that’s kids, their own business, or just doing what really tickles their fancy.
If this is the case for you then you probably need to seek out training and running a business or getting life done in a way that’s different than you’ve done all your life. This is no easy task but with the right frame of mind and motivation, this is a very legitimate path for you to take.
Plan Your Career Out Right
While considering the options that are available for your career and the change for your future, know that you can always go up, you can always go down, and if you need to, you can just go away. But whatever you do and wherever you go, make sure you’re doing what works best for you, your family, and your future.
