Why oh why would you want to kill an online business? They’re such wonderful things. You have a global marketplace, you have something that you probably created or are interested in yourself, and all you need to do is add some value to people lives and then you’ve got an extra source of income, right? Unfortunately, a lot of people, especially entrepreneurs have something called “shiny objects syndrome” and it’s very, very easy to catch.

There are so many technologies out there, new techniques and tools that come flying by every day, new books, new blogs, new videos, new web pages, new very interesting, promising and awesome ways to potentially get stuff done, that it can be hard to figure out what works best unless you try everything, right?
Well, not exactly. Any time you’re looking at a new tool or a new software as a service, new book, new method, new warrior forum, ebook, anything that’s going to take some of your time and money – you have to ask yourself: what do I expect to get out of this? How is it relevant to the business and can and will I apply it immediately? If you can’t answer affirmatively or specifically and quickly on all three of those, you probably should keep with what you have going on right now and just do them better. There is a necessary analysis that needs to be done.
I’m not saying you need to go straight “SWOT” on everything – Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and what’s the T? Troubles? I don’t know, look it up. But you don’t need to get that detailed for everything, but just use those three quick questions on any new shiny object that comes across your path and you’ll know whether or not you need to focus on it and you can stop the bleeding hemorrhage of information overload that is attacking your business. Because that’s what it is. It’s resistance. It’s that nettling, that death by a thousand cuts, that will only slow your growth even if there’s a chance for a very lucky mega-win hidden in one of those techniques.
There’s a 99% chance that if you do find one of those mega-techniques, it’s not going to work next year. It’s not going to change your bottom line permanently. It’s not going to add a skill that you can count on forever. It’s going to be a small technique that helps you immediately and sets back any permanent growth by the amount of time that you spend on it.
Think about that. Stop slowly bouncing around to the things that are distracting and focus on growth from the core. Treat the causes, the purpose and stop treating those little symptoms or those little feelers out there that probably won’t do much for your bottom line. Think about that. You might save yourself some time and money too.
