Brainstorming off the cuff here so, bare with me a bit. But, just one of those times where you have to record it, otherwise it might fleet away forever. But for money making stuff that I do, besides the consulting, (well, I guess everything) is it’s hard to know if it’s really worth your time without attaching numbers to it. Now you should only be doing things that are valuable to people so I’m not even going to talk about that, and just assume baseline that you’re only doing things that are actually adding value to people’s lives; it’s just a given.

But I tried experimenting with using the dollars per living hour number where you take whatever “Project X” that you do, and figure out how much it makes for the entire year divided by 8,760, which is the number of hours in a year. So while you sleep, while you eat, while you drink, while you do everything, how much does this project bring into your life continually, no matter what?
But the numbers don’t make a lot of sense just because they’re so small, and it’s hard to think that way. But, for instance, if you have a goal of making $100,000 a year before you move on out of your 9 to 5 or until you feel really comfortable, then you know, “Hey, somewhere around $300 a day is what I need to hit”. So, if you take that $300 a day and divide it up into a number of parts, like little puzzle pieces or pieces of the pie, it might start making a little bit more sense.
For instance, I think I’m going to do 50 pieces, so for every single project I do, I know that if it gets at least $6 a day overage coming back in, then that’s one piece of the pie and I only need 49 more to achieve that goal. So instead of some random number out there that’s intimidating, I can actually have like, index cards with numbers on them from 1 to 50, and as I fill them out or as I achieve these pie pieces that get me to my goal, I just write the number on there, write what it is, and how much it brings in on average, maybe with ideas on how to improve it, and a little progress on the way. I have this compact, tangible, visible way of tracking my progress towards that goal, and I can just set them down and I get a feel for how many is left, and it just keeps that goal out in front all the time.
I’m going to experiment with this. So far, I’ve been doing it mentally and you know, it just doesn’t have that same feel, so I’ll probably do it back on the whiteboard at home or index cards, or maybe trello slides or something on the phone. I don’t know, but I like the tangible part of it. But I encourage you to try this too. Get whatever goal you want for which you want to get out of life, especially if it’s income, and divide it up into tangible pie pieces, put those on index cards, and fill them out with where you’re at now.
Like, if you’re doing $60 a day and extra stuff, then okay great, you got 10 pie pieces out of the way; you only need 40 more to go. Isn’t that great? You’re already 20% of the way there. I mean it’s, I don’t know, it seems like a cool way to me. Give it a shot, and good luck. Share your progress; I’m interested. Peace out!
