Welcome to another edition of “How to Handle Emails.” This one is “Ideas Vetting.” So you’ve got a bit of a following or an email list, or people that are just randomly asking you questions and every once in awhile you get one that says, “Hey, Jimmy, I got this idea that I really think is a good one but I kinda want to bounce it off you and see what you think.”

And you know what you should do? Just say no. Really. Honestly. Especially if you’re doing any type of intellectual property type things, you don’t want to get caught in that. What if this is somehow related to something that you want to do in the future or are already doing, and it ends up being very successful? Well guess what? They could legitimately have an in to causing a little bit more mess in your business and somehow claiming that they have a right to whatever you’ve produced or gained because they gave you the idea.
I’m sure you could probably fight it and win, but do you really want to get into that situation at all? It’s best to have a policy of not helping people out with ideas and of not even accepting ideas and maybe even replying, “I’m sorry, I don’t. I immediately delete any emails that have anything to do with any type of ideas or intellectual property solely because of whatever.”
Be nice if you want or just be totally business about it and ask for forgiveness and understanding but you have to take of your bottom line first, and your bottom. Just say “no” to vetting ideas for others. Family and friends? Maybe. Depends on what they got you for Christmas. Alright. That’s another edition of “Handling Emails Made Easy” or something. Fancy titles. Make one up. Have a good one, bye.
