How to grow asparagus in your backyard? Should be more like how not to grow asparagus in your backyard! Because I can’t get rid of it! Don’t get me wrong, I love asparagus. But after having the ‘weed’ in my backyard for years now, I really don’t even check it anymore and it’s really kind of a nasty looking bush now.

But, basically if you have a piece of good looking asparagus with little shoots coming off the bottom, you can stick that in the ground and be done with it. Cut the top off. Or get the seeds, which would probably be easier, and then just forget about it for the rest of your life, ’cause it will start growing. And after a season or two, you’ll get those shoots that you can just cut off and eat.
I know it’s growing through the rhizomes so it grows up from the bottom, but I’ve run it over with a lawn mower, I’ve weed whacked it, I’ve chopped it up, I’ve cut it, I’ve beaten that thing up to all craziness, and it just keeps on coming back. Giving as much asparagus as we want.
So all of yall that are used to spending way too much money on asparagus at the grocery store know that it is pretty much a weed and very easy to grow at home. I don’t water it, I don’t do anything. So if you’re an asparagus junkie, start growing it. Save your bucks. Get your asparagus down that gullet. And enjoy a food that you really don’t even have to pay attention to.
