Learning through video would mean the convenience of being able to learn from home on your own time. You can finally take your time and review the material as often as you needed. You would have access to the information for future reference. Given that most people are visual learners, this will also be the optimal path with that in mind.
Studies have shown that the mind learns better when it is stimulated via multiple senses rather than just one. Video (which combines audio and visual stimulation) therefore allows you to retain what you’ve learned much better than simply audio or text.
This blog article is a branch out to life-optimizing readers like yourself that were kind enough to do a little question and answer interview survey with me. I’m still working on my interview skills (and some of these were done via email/not-in-person!), but I do promise good, raw, and honest answers from normal people like you and me. I do my best to NOT filter these answers, except for the bad words and hateful speech (which doesn’t happen often).
Topic of Interest: Learning Through Video
‘R’ = Richard N. Stephenson (me!)
‘I’ = Interviewee (anonymous by request unless otherwise noted)
R: Give an example of learning through video courses/DVD/Blur-ray/other video that has inspired you (from either internet/mainstream media examples or personal examples).
I: Video courses have been extremely helpful for me to learn different things, from a new language to jewelry. This way I could review over and over what I’m learning until I know I’ve mastered what I’m watching. I learned how to speak and write English and because of this I now live in the US. I’m now also starting a small jewelry making business after learning the skill through video courses.
R: How do you think a better understanding of learning through video courses/DVD/Blur-ray/other video would help other people in their personal or professional life?
I: Videos are becoming the teaching tool of the 21st century. Because of the popularity of YouTube, students are more familiar with interaction instead of just reading from a page of a book. Video allows the student to see and to learn principles that was originally only placed in a book or another printed publication.
R: Give an example of how learning through video courses/DVD/Blur-ray/other video has helped you professionally or personally.
I: I’ve watched videos on online courses distributed by Coursera an online free college. I would say the two courses i have watched video lectures for were both engaging and creative. I would like to see education taken further with this and hopefully adding interfaces to interact with the videos. Video learning is definitely where the future is headed. Hopefully it will be done right.
R: Describe at least one way you think learning through video courses/DVD/Blur-ray/other video could cause trouble or hurt someone in their personal or professional life.
I: Learning from a video course could cause trouble at home if you are spending too much time away from your family. You begin to neglect your partner and children, taking away time spent with them to focus on a course.
R: Give an example of how learning through video courses/DVD/Blur-ray/other video has hurt you or caused you trouble in the past.
I: There is nobody to ask for help if you don’t learn from an actual instructor. Something was unclear and I had nobody to clarify. Since I didn’t understand I got a bad mark on an assignment.
R: How do you think learning through video courses/DVD/Blur-ray/other video could help you in a professional setting? Why is that?
I: When i had a job interview for UPS, the main thing we were instructed to do was to learn about the job from a series of videos. The videos were actually accurate and it saved the company from having an actual person be in the room and tell us things. I can see this type of learning format be more common because of its efficiency.
R: Give an example of how learning through video courses/DVD/Blur-ray/other video could be useful at work. Why do you think this?
I: I think learning through these formats would be helpful because you could teach a group of people more easily in a subject that you may not fully understand. Everyone would be able to benefit from the learning instead of just one individual person. Learning this way could also reduce education costs, a cost that not everyone can afford.
R: How do you think learning through video courses/DVD/Blur-ray/other video could help you at home? Why is that?
I: watching videos relaxes the mind and why not learn something while being relaxed. Education is the key to any successful person and these days to be able to learn anything from home. Gain that knowledge without even leaving your house, helps you to be able to learn in less time.
R: Give an example of how learning through video courses/DVD/Blur-ray/other video could be useful at home or in family life. Why do you think this?
I: YouTube has been an invaluable resource for me when it comes to do-it-yourself projects or tips for my home. For example I learned how to get rid of fruit flies by watching a YouTube clip on how to make a home-made fruit fly trap using apple cider vinegar and saran wrap. I believe it has helped me greatly because I am primarily a visual learner, and seeing things done allows me to emulate it, and get a hands on, visual/kinetic experience while learning how to do something.
R: How do you think learning through video courses/DVD/Blur-ray/other video could help you in a personal relationship? Why is that?
I: Motivations videos are all over the place. As you watch these videos, you will gain confidence and believe that you can do it when you were thinking the opposite before. It gives you that push to start a relationship to eternal happiness.
R: Give an example of how learning through video courses/DVD/Blur-ray/other video could be useful in a personal relationship. Why do you think this?
I: Well it could be helpful if the person who would like help is shy or timid about approaching others about the subject. There are plenty of topics that people wouldn’t want to share with others and having a personal instructional video that no one need to know about could make the viewer feel more comfortable. Also having access to a video will allow the viewer to watch the material multiple times in case they missed an important idea.
R: Describe at least one thing you would like to learn more about learning through video courses/DVD/Blur-ray/other video.
I: There really isn’t much adult level instruction on Dinosaurs. I love paleobiology, and there is just such limited resources if you are not enrolled in a Paleontology program. Even better for some of the less studied creatures out there. Some great lectures on Pterosaurs or prehistoric crocodiles or sharks would be awesome.
R: Give your number one piece of advice for someone looking to learn more about learning through video courses/DVD/Blur-ray/other video.
I: When taking a learning course through DVD, you should always remember that consistency is key. When you start you should make sure you complete the entire course especially without taking long breaks in between. There should be a regular schedule dedicated to the course, as if you were in school actually. That is how you can attain the most information and really internalize all that you have learned.
