I know you’re not the kind of person who’s just going to show up in sandals, shorts, and a tank top shirt for an interview. But, there are maybe small subtleties that have lost favor in our current society. This is also true for what we see in the media and whatnot, and this needs to be addressed. No pun intended, I promise.
There are certain ways that you go about presenting your internal success and feelings about what you’re actually going for. These ‘tells’ can either make or break your success in an interview. You want to project the success inside, you want to make sure you go with modesty, and you want to go safe, not bold. These are the four tips I’ll jump into right now – here we go.
1) Dress Like Internal Success
You want this job, not just because you want a paycheck, because it’s the right choice. You know that you can provide value to this company and that you’ll be a good fit. While you may not understand all of the details that are coming up in what you’re aiming for, you know that you’re flexible, adaptable, and can get the job done.
Dress like that.
Dress like you feel inside. And if you don’t feel that way, you’re just going to have to fake it, because you will make it eventually after you put in enough time and effort. But don’t go in dressing sloppily, messy, and in a way that just seems to project the fact that you don’t have the confidence and motivation necessary to go for this position.
I know that’s a little wishy-washy, and it’s hard to take nuggets of gold advice out of that. But if you’re aiming for a sales position, then you know you’re going to have to be that “one notch above” that’s going to look good for customers. If you know you’re in customer service and will hardly ever see anyone because you’re on the phone all day, that doesn’t mean you need to dress down, it still means you need to dress professional. Even dressing up at that type of position is good because it helps you project the professional feeling over the phone. It matters. Keep that in mind.
2) Always Go With Modesty
This isn’t just women, this is men, too. You know, you can unbutton your shirt all the way down to your belly button for the men, maybe don’t have an undershirt, and do all kinds of other silly-style or cut clothes. Silly things that tend to get people to not focus on the work and getting things done.
Same goes for women. Whether it’s sleeveless shirts, or low-cut necklines, or any of that kind of stuff. You’re there to work, right? We all love attention, it’s one of the things on the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs: attraction and sexual attention. I understand that.
However, when at work, it’s a time to focus on the work, and help other people out so that they can focus on their work, too. There’s really not much else that needs to be said. We’re adults, playtime is after work, okay?
3) Out With The Wrinkles
I know I’m a little lazy about this sometimes, and I probably buy the “wrinkle-free” shirts just for this fact alone, even though I don’t think they work very well. You have to take care of not just your overall appearance, but the fine details when it comes to someone that’s inspecting you so closely during an interview.
Undo the wrinkles, don’t forget your collar stays, and make sure you do the lint roller on the jacket. Bring an extra couple collar stays, just have it situated to where the last thing you want to think about is a wrinkle or some other funkiness in your dress.
It’s something you can take care of ahead of time, don’t waste your mental processes on it. And most interviewers won’t sit there and nit-pick every fine detail, but it helps with your confidence, and it’s just in case.
4) Go Safe, Not Bold
I know you’ll see somewhere where they say, “well, wear this dark blue power suit with the gigantically bright and bold yellow tie,” or some crazy combination of “I’m projecting power” and whatnot. Yeah, don’t worry about that.
Go plain, dress at the same level or one level above of the interviewer and you’ll be okay. For instance, if you know it’s a pretty casual place, you can dress business casual and maybe one up. And if you don’t know what any of this means, well, for men go with your sport jacket, your tie, slacks, your dress pair of dark shoes, and a belt to match.
For women, go with a nice, professional-cut lady’s business suit, comfortable shoes, and modest jewelry. There’s’ really not much else to it. Okay? Forget all the bold colors and forget being “the one” that leaves the lasting impression because of your coral-colored vest. Don’t do any of that. They’ve seen it – it doesn’t work.
Get Your Appearances in Order Already
If you really want to make a good impression on the job interview, those four tips are the ones you need to keep in mind. You need to make sure you dress like the internal success that you have, and that you feel. You need to make sure you always err on the side of modesty. You’ve also got to take care of the wrinkles and the little things like that while going safe, not bold.
Take care of these things right away. You’ll get your mind off of the things that don’t need to be worried about when it comes to an interview. You’ll be able to focus on the content and proving your value to the company, which is best for your employment success.
