I would hazard to guess that most people don’t have to worry about general hygiene when it comes to job interviews. However times are tough, people are rushed, and we just sometimes forget about things.
You know the people I’m talking about that they maybe don’t take a shower or wash their hair, or brush teeth as often as necessary. Sometimes these things happen. However a job interview is a place and time where you don’t want these things to happen.
If you know you have this problem, now’s the time to prepare for an interview to go off smoothly, and to get things smelling right again. I know it sounds silly and I’m not trying to make fun of anybody but it is an important thing that kind of has a fun aspect to it. So bear with me as I go through these four hygiene tips that will ensure at least a successful approach to your next job interview.
Unstink Tip #1) Please Take A Shower
I understand you like to take a shower at night after you workout and you wake up perfectly fine in the morning. However is it really going to hurt you to get fresh and clean and nice and sparkly, smelling good, the next day, just this one time?
I know you say, “Oh, I don’t smell too bad, it doesn’t really matter to me.” You’re going to be very close to somebody for probably a good chunk of time and it’s just nice to rule out this one thing. Get it out of the way, break your routine for one day, and it’s just one more check mark of success and it’s something you don’t have to worry about. It’s worth it.
Unstink Tip #2) Clothes: So Fresh And So Clean
I don’t like to iron stuff and I don’t like to get stuff dry cleaned so this is perfectly applicable to me and anything that I do. Yes I do have clean clothes but sometimes they are not awesomely presented. It’s something that needs to be taken care of.
If it’s every day I can understand, you don’t want to pressure clothes every day. However you really shouldn’t wear shirts in a professional setting, especially interviews more than one time, and it should be ironed and look nice.
Yes I know, men can get away with wearing blue jeans 15 days in a row, and no one is the wiser. Look good, don’t worry about looking too good, but do a little bit more then you already do so you can get that out of the way.
Unstink Tip #3) Feeling Sick? Stay Away
If you’re sick, you have no business going on an interview. I know that you’re very anxious and your looking forward to the next step. Unfortunately it’s just not really cool of you to show up if you’re sick, or you’re hurt, or just totally out of whack.
Let the interviewer know hey you came up with something and you don’t think it would be great to expose that person to what you got, and chances are they are going to be completely understanding of your situation. Maybe they don’t have the slot to reschedule and you’re out of the running. If that’s the case, so be it.
At least you did the right thing but I bet the chances are that they will be willing to reschedule a couple of days later. Whatever you do, don’t be a ‘you know what’ and just show up because you’re so anxious to get the job. It’s not going to go off well, you’re going to sound funky and it’s just not cool.
Unstink Tip #4) Fresh-Breath It Up!
Sure you don’t brush the four times a day that’s recommended by the American Dental Association, that’s fine, I wouldn’t either. However bring a toothbrush. You don’t even need toothpaste but if you can, bring your toothbrush, bring a little tube of toothpaste, do a little bit of freshening up an hour or two, maybe before you leave to go to the interview.
Make sure that’s set off the right point. Think of your mouth as a cone of sound and funk. Okay? Especially when you are this far away from someone, the last thing you want to do is be projecting funk their entire direction, for an hour.
Well, if you’re very funky, it is not going to be an hour interview, okay if you catch my drift. So freshen up and don’t let them catch your bad drift.
Unstink Yourself for the Win
Stop being that stinky, unhygienic and unprofessional looking person. It’s time to boost your interview skills and your appearance for the job that you really want. Take an extra shower, make sure your clothes are pressed and extra clean, stay away if you’re just not at optimal, or sick, and make sure that your breath is pristine.
These are things that you can take care of very easily and they set you one step closer to getting what you want and what their company wants out of an effective and professional candidate. I know that this has been a little bit silly, but it’s good stuff and it’s useful, and I hope you can apply it immediately and directly to your life.
