In today’s society especially with people looking for work, one of the key departments most people will deal with is the human resources department. Human resources, also known as HR, has a lot of different responsibilities, but the key philosophy of human resources is hiring and retaining new hires. So if you are looking for a new job, you’ll benefit from taking a good look at human resources and how they will interact with you.
A Quick HR Overview
The human resources department has many jobs that affect your daily corporate life. However, in this article I will only look at the hiring process. To tease you a bit with what other functions and duties HR has, here is a quick list.
- Recruiting
- Interviewing
- Job Offer/ Hiring
- Benefits
- Training
- Retention
- Policy and Procedures
- Promotions
A lot of these different headings fall under HR (very broad subject!), however some are more associated with the new HR department of this article. Let’s look at recruiting through training.
In the Beginning, HR Was Abound
Whenever a company is looking to hire, that is when the recruiting stage kicks in. Sometimes the hiring comes about unexpectedly due to a firing or someone quitting after finding their passion in life. In some cases the company decides to expand and does a recruiting campaign. One of the key ways to get new recruits is at job fairs or career fairs all run by HR. Personally, I find job fairs absolutely useless, but your mileage may vary. When you’re desperate, you’re desperate.
Then again, if you catch someone’s eye at the job fair, you may get called in for an interview. If you do get the call, dress to impress. This is crucial because this gives you the opportunity to show them how valuable you are to them and the company. Be prepared, be early, and be dressed to win.
Keep the Interviews in Mind
Also keep in mind you may have to do more than one interview. Once you have made it past the interview they will usually do a background investigation and drug screening. Do not stress if they ask you to do this, it’s a normal part of the process. Now if you have passed the interview, background, and drug screening it’s on to the next stage.
The Job offer & Training
Success, you made it! Now comes the fun part, when HR makes you an offer. Feel good about getting the offer because a lot of people out there go on interviews and never get an offer. You did. (Yay!) After the offer get prepared to sign your attention and commitment over to some good corporate work.
Once all your paperwork is cleared up, then HR will usually set you up for training. Once all of that is done, you are now part of the team, as long as you make it through the probationary period. You have to survive the trial-by-fire to get the complete hire. It never hurts to be a good worker AND be clever. Try it some time.
Human Resources is Here to Stay
As one can see, the overall human resource philosophy of hiring the best of the best to help the rest is a critical part of the employment process. HR’s functions are crucial in recruiting, hiring, and training the right individuals. Once you have been brought on board, human resources wants to retain you as part of their team.
They are the life blood of the company and also a beacon of hope and help for their employees. Keep HR in mind and they won’t leave you behind. Why don’t you try to make their life easier by suggesting some of the career-help tools here? They need more time and this just might be the boost they need.
