Personality quizzes are a fun way to explore aspects of our personality. Quizzes can be fun and silly or they can be deep and involved, exploring any number of fictitious or real elements of our personality. They can also be an enjoyable way to compare one’s results with others and explore differences and similarities. Personality quizzes are popular and there are new ones being developed every day, usually for social media sites and the like. They differ from personality assessments in that there is usually no psychological research and stern testing requirements to develop the most effective test and no validity to the answers, but all the same they are fun and entertaining ways of exploring our personality.
I think it is important for people to gain information and education from personality quizzes. The point of a personality quiz is to learn who you are. People who are taking them must not be too sure, and should walk away from the quiz knowing something more about themselves.
There’s no better way to figure out what will help people the most than to just straight up ask them. Surveys, interviews, emails, whatever tool works best – as long as people are getting helped! I asked a few of my visitors, test takers, and researchers to share their thoughts to help me better understand how people work. I’m sharing it with you in hopes you’d get something out of it, too. I’m also trying to bring their words to you with as little filtering as possible, so please bear with the awesome level of personal-tough this article has.
Now’s the time to focus on your professional development, your career growth, and the overall future of all things job related.
Today’s Focus: Personality Quizzes
‘R’ = Richard N. Stephenson (me!)
‘I’ = Interviewee (anonymous by request unless otherwise noted)
R: Why would anyone really want to pay attention to this subject?
I: Personality quizzes can provide harmless entertainment. The more serious ones can show you your strengths and weaknesses or help you understand yourself better. This information can help you make better choices in what you study and what careers you pursue. It can also help you get along better with your partner by understanding his or her personality and how he or she thinks.
R: How do you think this could change someone’s life?
I: With a personality quiz, they can learn if they have a personality disorder and seek assistance. The personality quiz will offer them a go point in starting to treat any disorder, or to seek counseling if it’s something that could be handled that way.
R: Explain what about this subject could help people be just all around better.
I: Personality quizzes are designed to give the tester a better understanding of the respondents personality traits. Often they place individuals into groups that are defined by these traits. Understanding that there are various groups who on a broad scale have similar reactions and responses in social situations makes it easier to accept the reaction. While people are individuals it is definitely interesting to observe the things that make us both similar and different from one another.
R: Who out there is a good example of using this subject to the fullest?
I: People who are in the psychology field may be good at personality quizzes. Also, job recruiters may use them to help you find what you’re good at. They can be used by psychologists to determine what kind of personality you have and where you should have a job in life.
R: Think back to your past friends, coworkers, and family; is there anyone who could use help with this subject?
I: Men often do not enjoy personality quizzes as much as women. When men get together with their friends they do not like to discuss another friend’s personality behind is back. Often men prefer focusing on enjoying an activity with their other male friends, such a bowling. Men tend to be action oriented and prefer problem solving, whereas women enjoy discussing relationships and their feelings.
R: If you had to pick right now, how could you use this subject in your life more?
I: If a person is interested in personality quizzes, they should research the topic at a bookstore. A bookstore is recommended because the information in published paper books is likely to be more vetted than information on the internet. The person should consider what they want to learn about themselves. That way, they can make the best use of their time taking personality quizzes. The person should also consider where the survey is coming from, as a survey in a teen magazine may be less scientific than one in a peer-reviewed psychology review.
R: Pick a time, pick any time: when should folks out there bring this idea into their lives?
I: Before someone starts looking for a career, they should take personality quizzes. Personality quizzes will help someone determine their likes and dislikes as well as their interests. This will help them choose the right career.
R: When’s just a really bad time to be working on this subject?
I: Personality quizzes can be a worthwhile learning exercise in self-discovery. But not all personality traits are appropriate for every situation. In a new job where extroversion may be preferred, it may not be wise to bring up your introverted tendencies.
R: Where’s the best place someone can bring this topic into their life?
I: Online surveys are great to get peoples honest opinions. You will get all different types of people, from different demographic areas. This allows you to expand your research.
R: This subject is not fit for use in every situation. Where should folks not use it?
I: The use of a personality quiz might result in a bad outcome if it was administered to someone with a personality disorder without proper clinical guidance. Someone with a personality disorder would definitely need a clinician to decipher the results. Proper care should be taken when doing personality test. The validity of such test should also be taken into consideration.
R: In your opinion, who out there could use a little more help with this subject?
I: Some companies might have you take a personality test as part of the application process where they tell you “there is no right or wrong answer.” This is BS because there is a right answer, it’s the one that gives you a high score. The only way to pass these is to lie and pretend that you’re perfect. For example for the question where they ask you if there are people you just can’t stand, you must answer “not at all.” Any HR department could benefit from a better understanding of this topic because if they understand how pointless these things are and that no honest human being could pass.
R: What would you tell the readers to do if they wanted to get help with this topic soon?
I: My advice is to enjoy them and not to over-estimate the value or relevance, either. My advice is to answer them as absolutely as honestly as possible, with the intention of the most accurate results. My advice is to USE the results, in ways that are not profound, but will be most apparent only to you, yourself.
R: What would you say is something we should avoid at all costs when it comes to this topic?
I: People should avoid rushing through personality quizzes. When you rush through it, you aren’t really thinking about what the question is asking. You should always think about the question and your answer before answering.
R: Tell us of an example of when we can use this topic in our lives?
I: They can understand themselves more. If they are out at a grocery store, they can know how to interact with people that will help them enjoy their grocery experience more. For instance, if you are an introvert and learn that talking to people will bother you, you can just put headphones on and keep to yourself.
