Raising Modest Kids in a World That’s Lost Its Shirt

I was down at a church function last Sunday, and I’m talkin’ to a young fella whose son can’t be more than eight. We’re just shootin’ the breeze when he says, “Bojangles, my boy came home askin’ for a new video game because all his friends have it. Said if he doesn’t get it, they’ll think he’s weird.”

I chuckled and said, “Son, bein’ weird is a good start. Bein’ holy is the goal.” But that conversation stuck with me. It’s not just about video games or the latest “sneaker drop” anymore. The world we’re handin’ over to our children is a real-life fashion show where modesty has taken a permanent vacation.

It’s everywhere, isn’t it? Scroll through any social media feed for five minutes and your eyeballs might need a holy water rinse. Our boys and girls are bombarded with messages that scream, “Attract attention! Show more! Be more!” And we, as parents and guardians of their souls, have got to be the anchors in this stormy sea.

So how do you teach a kid about modesty when the culture is practically handing out participation trophies for immodesty? How do you build a fortress of faith around them when every billboard and TV show is tryin’ to kick down the walls?

Modesty Isn’t About Hiding; It’s About Revealing

First thing we need to get straight in our own heads is what modesty is. A lot of folks think it’s about coverin’ up and bein’ shy or dour. That ain’t it. The Catechism tells us it’s “a virtue that prescribes a way of dressing, speaking, and acting so as not to provoke others to sin.” (CCC 2523)

Think of it this way: Modesty is like a well-fitted pair of overalls. You don’t wear ’em to hide yourself from the world. You wear ’em because they let you work freely without gettin’ in your way, and they protect your valuable parts – your hands, your knees, your dignity. It’s about protection and purpose.

For our kids, it’s teachin’ them that their bodies are sacred temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19), not just pieces of meat on display for public consumption or approval. When we teach ’em modesty, we’re givin’ ’em tools to protect themselves and respect others.

The Battle Plan: Practical Strategies for Catholic Parents

Alright, enough philosophy. You want the “how-to.” Here’s a toolkit of practical strategies you can start usin’ today.

1. Be the Example (Your Kids Are Watching)

You can’t tell a boy to keep his eyes down and a shirt on while you’re watchin’ every sports game in your underwear with the door wide open. You can’t lecture a girl about dressin’ modestly if her momma’s closet is full of things she wouldn’t want her own daughter wearin’.

The Golden Rule: Your actions are the loudest sermons you’ll ever preach.

Dress for Success (and Sanctity): Wear clothes that are respectful and appropriate. You don’t have to dress like you’re goin’ to Confession every time you leave the house, but a little class goes a long way.

Guard Your Screen: What’s on your phone? Your TV? Our kids learn more by what we consume than by what we say. If immodesty is scrollin’ past on my screen, it’s trainin’ their eyes to see it as normal.

2. Start ‘Em Young with “Why”

Don’t wait until they’re 16 and suddenly care about what other people think. Plant the seeds early.

The Bathroom Metaphor: When they’re little, explain that our private parts are special. They’re like a secret treasure map, and you only show it to the right person at the right time (a doctor with a parent present, for instance). This builds a foundation of bodily autonomy and respect.

Use Everyday Objects: Point out how things work. “See this lock on the door? It keeps our home safe from strangers. Our bodies have a spiritual ‘lock’ called modesty that protects our souls.”

3. Equip Them with “The Why” and “The How”

They need more than just a command; they need a reason.

For Girls: Explain it’s not about them bein’ less attractive or conforming to some old-fashioned rule. It’s about them being in control of their own story. Immodest clothes shout for attention, but modest ones let their personality and character speak.

Cover Calmly: Nothing body-tight (it shouldn’t look like underwear or a second layer of skin). High necklines, no bellies showing, and dresses at least a little below the knees.

For Boys: This is just as important for them.

Teach them about respecting women and their bodies. Staring, catcalling – it’s all a form of objectification that robs a woman of her dignity.

Talk about the “objectification trap.” When you look at someone only as a collection of parts, you miss out on who they really are.

4. Create a “Media-Free Zone”

The digital world is the biggest enemy of modesty today. It’s relentless.

Set Tech Boundaries: No phones in bedrooms after a certain hour. Use parental controls. Be present for their online activity.

* Have The Talks Early and Often: Don’t do one big, awkward “sex talk.” Have small, natural conversations sprinkled throughout the years. Ask them what they’re seein’, what they think about it.

When They Push Back: Handling Peer Pressure

Your son is gonna come home from school sayin’ all the other boys are wearin’ saggy pants that show their underwear. Your daughter will say every girl at the mall has a crop top shorter than a postage stamp.

This is where you’ve gotta be strong but gentle, like a blacksmith shapin’ steel – firm pressure with a steady hand.

The “Saintly Strategy”:

1. Listen First: Let ’em get it all out.

2. Empathize: “I know that’s tough, honey. It feels like you’re the only one not in on the joke.”

3. Reframe the Narrative: “But here’s a secret I’m gonna let you in on: being different is a superpower. You’re not just followin’ the herd; you’re set apart for greatness.”

4. Offer an Alternative: “What about those new athletic shorts? They look sharp, they’re comfortable, and you can still be part of the game.”

Remember what St. Augustine said: “The sins of the flesh are born of pride.” Teach your kids that true confidence comes from God, not from peer approval.

A Word on Raising Saints, Not Social Butterflies

This job ain’t easy. Some days you’re gonna feel like you’re fightin’ a whole army of influencers and advertisers with just a wooden ruler and a good intention.

But here’s the secret: God didn’t give you this mission because it was convenient. He gave it to you because He trusts you. He trusts you to be that beacon, that anchor, that voice of sanity in the chaos.

So keep prayin’. Keep teachin’. And for heaven’s sake, keep laughin’.

When your daughter rolls her eyes and says, “Dad, you’re so old-fashioned,” just give her a wink and say, “Yep. And I’m also the one who’ll be here to pick up the pieces when this world lets you down.”

Because at the end of the day, our goal ain’t to raise kids who fit in perfectly with the world. Our goal is to raise sons and daughters of God who are ready to change it.
