When you are just getting by, it is hard to save and hard to plan. When paying the rent is at issue, it is impossible to think about your children’s college or your own retirement. Someone who is just getting by has anxieties that someone with an emergency savings account, no matter how small, has managed to escape.
It’s difficult to deny yourself small luxuries. Nevertheless, that is one route to a savings account. Walking to work, if possible, bagging your lunch or even giving up a phone is one way to start saving and stop living hand to mouth.
A second job will use up your free time and keep you busier than you want to be. A roommate will impair your privacy. All the same, a second job and a roommate are two ways to end the anxiety of just getting by. Try one or the other for a few months, and see how much you can save.
