Brainstorming is giving people, usually many people, the time and space to be creative. Brainstorming is NOT about coming up with a single perfect idea but rather is about coming up with many imperfect ideas. Oftentimes, two or three imperfect ideas will lead to a perfect idea. Brainstorming must be done in a secure, non-judgmental environment since most ideas will be bad.
If someone were good at brainstorming, they could seriously help their company by coming up with useful ideas for new products, services, marketing strategies, business models, etc. Brainstorming is useful in one’s personal life since it allows people to find new, better, and more efficient ways to live. It also can help one figure out what hobbies and interests one has yet to pursue but should try.
I’m a teacher, and obviously brainstorming is a very effective tool in the classroom. However, if the environment is hostile or judgmental, then brainstorming can not only be ineffective, it can be dangerous. People’s self-esteem and sense of self worth is often fragile. If a student has classmates who regularly make fun of what he or she says, that student will gradually become less and less willing to share what he or she thinks. Eventually, he or she will just stop thinking. It’s very sad to see people give up on critical thinking because they’ve been taught by their peers that they are not good at it.
