Keeping Your Brain’s Attic Well Stocked: Tips to Boost Memory

Let me start off by saying this: our memory isn’t a fixed thing. It’s a flexible entity that can be trained, primed, and sharpened, much like an athlete getting their body in peak form. I want to share with you, my professional pals, some ways to increase your memory prowess. You never know when those grandma-sized recall chops will come in handy in the fast-paced corporate world.

First and foremost, we got to Feed Our Brain, folks!

Just like a body needs nutritious food to function well, so does our brain. And nope, I’m not talking about grabbing that double cheeseburger in a desperate attempt for cognitive stimulation. Instead, consider upgrading your diet. A brain-friendly menu would include omega 3-rich foods like fish, leafy veggies such as spinach and kale which are packed with nutrients, whole grains which keep our blood sugar steady, and finally, don’t forget the antioxidants from fruits and vegetables. Just think, each meal you take can be an opportunity to fuel up for memory retention!

Secondly, let’s not neglect Sleep.

When you sleep, your brain processes all that information it has been gobbling up during the day – sort of like when mom cleaned up after we’d made a mess in the kitchen. While you slumber, your mind is working tirelessly, filing away information into long-term memory storage. Therefore, make sure to give yourself adequate time to rest. And no, grabbing a caffeine fix isn’t an equivalent replacement. Remember, a well-rested brain retains better than a tired one!

Another important factor is Exercise.

Studies show that people who exercise regularly have less brain shrinkage as they age compared to their less active counterparts. So hit those pavements for a jog, or take up swimming. Incorporating any physical activity you enjoy into your daily routine will not just keep your body fit but also keep that grey matter in tiptop shape!

We then move onto the mighty Brain Games.

Not like Tetris or Candy Crush – although they can be addictive – I’m talking about mentally challenging tasks and games designed to improve cognitive skills, especially memory. Puzzles, Sudoku, and even learning a new language all require your brain to work overtime and are perfect ways to flex your recall muscle.

Don’t Forget Prayer.

Calming the mind can strengthen brain areas associated with memory. When you pray, your heart rate slows down, and you breathe deeply allowing more oxygen to reach your brain cells. It aids focus and concentration which indirectly contributes to your memory capacity. And God’s graces will provide!

Learn Something New as often as you can!

Whether it be picking up a new skill or learning about different cultures through their art, history, and cuisines. Learning stimulates neural activity and enhances our capacity to remember. It keeps our brain flexible and agile.

Last but not least, let’s talk Socializing.

Human interactions, believe it or not, are important for our brain health too! Engaging with others keeps the communication channels open which can positively impact memory retention. So don’t be shy to strike up a chat; after all, people who talk more tend to remember better.

There are some solid ideas on how to sharpen your memory saw. It isn’t about trying to become some human supercomputer overnight. It’s about making small adjustments and changes that over time will pay off in terms of remembering those vital work details or perhaps more importantly, not forgetting a friend’s birthday.
