Is Your Netflix Binge a Spiritual Marathon or a Moral Maraud?

I remember the time my boy brought home a video game that looked like it was straight from the ninth circle of Dante’s Inferno – I kid you not! The cover art had more gore than a butcher’s freezer and the dialogue would’ve made a sailor blush. His mom – bless her heart, she’s a saint for putting up with us – just sighed and said, “Billy, is this what you want your mind to be full of?” We’ve all been there, haven’t we? Staring at a screen, scrolling through a feed, or queuing up a movie and suddenly asking ourselves, “Wait… am I being entertained right now, or just entertained away from my soul?”

In today’s world, we’re drowning in distractions. The entertainment industry throws everything but the kitchen sink – and sometimes that sink itself! – at us, 24/7. It can feel like standing on a beach during a hurricane – you’ve got no idea which way is up! But here’s the secret they don’t want you to know: You’re the gatekeeper of your own mind. Choosing what goes in isn’t just about what makes you laugh or cry; it’s about building up the fortress of virtue inside you.

Here’s how to sort the wheat from the chaff, the holy water from the snake oil, and start treating your entertainment like the good Catholic man or woman that you are!

The Three-Part Test: Is It Worth Your Time? 🧐

Before you hit “play,” run it through this simple test inspired by St. Paul’s words in Philippians 4:8 – “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

1. The Truth Test: Does It Line Up with Reality?

First, ask yourself: “Does this show/have I read/am I about to watch tell the truth?” Not just factual truth – like a historical documentary – but moral truth.

The Analogy: Think of it like a recipe. A good recipe uses quality ingredients that work together to make something delicious and nourishing. A bad one might get you there, but with a nasty aftertaste. Your soul is the meal, and entertainment is the ingredient list!

In Practice: Does that comedy rely on mocking people’s faith or human dignity? Does that drama glorify adultery as romantic instead of sinful? If it makes your conscience twitch, that’s St. Thomas Aquinas giving you a little nudge from heaven. Trust it!

2. The Beauty Test: Is It Lovely?

Now for the fun part – beauty! God is the author of all that is true and beautiful. Art, music, stories – they can point us back to Him like a compass needle.

The Analogy: This is why we plant flowers in our yards. They don’t give us food or practical value, but they lift our spirits. Beauty does that for the soul.

In Practice: Listen to the music before you watch the movie – is it uplifting? Look at the cinematography – does it make your heart feel bigger? Sometimes a sunrise has more to say than any Hollywood blockbuster.

3. The Virtue Test: Does It Build Me Up?

This is the most important one, folks. Will watching this thing make me a better husband, wife, father, mother, or neighbor? Or will it leave you feeling empty, angry, or full of worldly desires?

The Analogy: We’re all building houses with our lives. Some entertainment is like using bricks – solid, reliable, helps the structure grow strong. Other stuff is like using drywall and paint – looks nice for a bit but offers no real support.

In Practice: Does that show inspire gratitude? Patience? Kindness to others? Or does it leave you jealous of other people’s lives or resentful about your own?

Practical Guide to Media Sanity 🛠️

Let’s get our hands dirty with some real talk tools. You can’t just have theory – you need a toolbox.

1. Know Your Battlefield: Create a Family Media Plan

This isn’t about being a tyrant, but a strategist! Sit down as a family and decide:

When will screens be on? (Not during dinner!)

What kinds of content are okay?

Where is the TV/computer placed? (Out of bedrooms if possible – that’s where we recharge our souls, not just our devices!)

It turns conversations into decisions, not demands.

2. The “One Question” Rule

Before you hit play, ask yourself this simple question: “After I’m done watching/playing/listening to this, will my soul be cleaner or dirtier?” It’s like checking your pockets before going into the house – you know what you’re bringing home.

3. Find Your “Holy” Alternatives

Don’t just say “no” – say “yes!” to something better.

Instead of binge-watching that drama: Try reading a classic novel (C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien are your friends here!).

Instead of violent video games: How about building something in Minecraft? Or learning guitar?

Instead of mindless scrolling: Pick up a rosary and pray the Joyful Mysteries.

4. The “Bojangles’ Break” Challenge

Every time you feel yourself getting sucked into a media vortex – a Netflix hole, an Instagram scroll – stop! Get up for five minutes. Stretch your legs, look outside, say a quick prayer to St. Jude (the patron of desperate cases, which we all are sometimes!). Reset your mind.

A Note on Understanding “Moral Compromise” 🤔

Now I know some folks might think this sounds rigid – like we’re living in the 1950s under a rock somewhere! But let me tell you something: moral compromise isn’t about missing out; it’s about making room.

Every time you let harmful content into your life, it crowds out something better. It steals time from prayer, from family, from growing closer to God. St. John Vianney said that the devil fears crude sins but dreads refined ones – and a steady diet of entertainment that slowly dulls your conscience? That’s the devil’s finest work.

The goal isn’t legalism; it’s liberation! Freedom from the anxiety, anger, lust, and envy that poison our lives. As St. Augustine wrote: “You have made us for Yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” Everything we choose should bring us closer to that peace.

Bonus Resources 🛠️✝️

Here are some quick picks from my own bookshelf and playlists:

Movies: The Chronicles of Narnia, It’s a Wonderful Life, The Sound of Music

Music: Any classical composer (Bach, Vivaldi – they wrote for God!), Catholic hymnals

* Books: The entire C.S. Lewis collection, anything by G.K. Chesterton

And don’t forget about the classics from our own tradition!

Let’s Wrap It Up: Your Action Plan 🎯

So there you have it, folks! Choosing good entertainment isn’t a chore; it’s an adventure. Here’s your quick checklist:

1. Run everything through The Three-Part Test.

2. Create a family media plan. Talk about it!

3. Ask the “One Question.” Clean soul > dirty soul, every time.

4. Find holy alternatives. Replace bad with good!

5. Take Bojangles’ Breaks. Reset your mind and heart.

This isn’t just about what we watch – it’s about who we become. Every choice is a brick in the cathedral of your life. Let’s make sure ours are built to last for eternity!

Now go on, be the gatekeeper. Your soul will thank you for it. And hey – if you need some recommendations, I’ve got a list longer than my arm back here at the store. Just don’t tell my wife I’m giving away free advice! 😉
