From Quitting Quitters to Finish Line Champions

I’m thinking of the time I tried to teach my dog, Buster, to fetch. He’d sprint after that tennis ball with all the enthusiasm of a firecracker – until he hit his first wall. Literally. Then he’d just give me this look like, “Master, is this really worth it?” And honestly? For a good long while, I was right there with him.

We’ve all been Buster at some point. We start a project, join the gym, or vow to read that book – only to let momentum fizzle into excuses. Persistence isn’t about being superhuman; it’s about showing up even when your spirit’s flagging. So how do we become finish-line champions instead of quitters? Let’s break it down with some hard-won wisdom and a few laughs along the way.

1. The Micro-Goal Magic: Small Wins, Big Grit

Bojangles’ Rule #1: Never try to eat an elephant in one bite – unless you’re my friend Jim at the county fair, and even then, it’s a bad idea. Persistence isn’t about heroic leaps; it’s about steady steps.

Try This: Pick one tiny goal today. If you want to run a 5K, start with jogging to the mailbox. If you’re learning a language, memorize three words. When you hit those micro-goals? Celebrate. Dance in your kitchen. Tell your wife you just conquered a mountain (even if it’s just folding laundry).

Why It Works: Studies from Stanford show that small wins release dopamine – your brain’s “reward chemical” – which fuels motivation. Remember that holiness isn’t about grand gestures but daily love in tiny actions. Persistence? That’s just sanctity with a work ethic.

2. Failure: Your Undercover Trainer

Ever see a kid fall off his bike and pop right back up, grinning? We adults act like every stumble is a catastrophe. But what if failures weren’t stop signs – they were just detours with lessons attached?

A Story to Chew On: Thomas Edison didn’t invent the lightbulb on try #1 (or 100, for that matter). When asked about his “failures,” he quipped, “I haven’t failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that don’t work.” That’s resilience in a nutshell: treating failure like an old friend who shows you the back door when the front one’s locked.

Reflection Practice: Grab a notebook and write down what went wrong – then ask yourself: “What did this teach me?” Maybe your business pitch flopped because you talked too much. Great! Next time, listen more. Failures are like crossword puzzles: they look annoying at first, but solving them feels awesome.

3. Heroes in Hiding: Find Your Inspiration

Sometimes we need a reminder that grit pays off. But you don’t need to be a superhero – just someone willing to keep going.

– Athletes: Think of Michael Jordan getting cut from his high school team or Serena Williams losing early matches before dominating again. They didn’t quit; they reloaded.

– Inventors: James Dyson vacuumed up 5,126 failures before one worked. Talk about persistence!

Your Challenge: Pick a real-life hero (it can be your grandma who bakes the same pie every Thanksgiving or your neighbor who still runs after 70). Write down one trait they have that inspires you. Then borrow from it. Not literally – unless they bake well, in which case, offer to trade chores for a slice.

4. The “Why” Muscle: Reconnect with Your Mission

When the going gets tough, it’s easy to forget why you started. That’s why St. Paul wrote, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9). Keep that harvest in sight!

How-To:

– Write your “why” on a sticky note and slap it on your mirror. “I’m training so I can play with my grandkids without wheezing.”

– Share your goal with a friend. Peer pressure (the good kind) is a powerful motivator – like when my wife tells me, “Bojangles, if you finish that book, I’ll make your favorite pork chops.” Suddenly, persistence feels delicious.

Bonus: The Persistence Toolkit

– The 5-Minute Rule: Can’t bring yourself to start? Commit to just 5 minutes. Often, momentum kicks in.

– Reward Yourself: Treated my crew at the hardware store to ice cream cones every time we hit a quarterly goal. Made quitting feel like leaving free money on the table.

– Pray for Patience (and a Good Nap): Some days, persistence feels less like grit and more like survival. That’s when a quick prayer or a power nap can work wonders.

Keep Chasing That Finish Line

Persistence isn’t about never falling – it’s about getting back up with a better strategy. Set micro-goals, learn from stumbles, find inspiration in everyday heroes, and remember your “why.” And if you ever feel like giving up? Just think of Buster – that dog still tries to fetch that ball, even if he trips over his own paws sometimes. That’s how we win the game: one small step at a time.
